Medicare beneficiaries in South Carolina have an option where they can enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan. There are certain out of pocket medical costs like copayments, deductibles, and coinsurance that are not covered by Original Medicare Part A or Part B. The supplement plans are also known as Medigap or MedSup are policies provided by private insurance companies and are all created to help fill in gaps found in Original Medicare coverage.
There are 10 standard Medicare Supplement plans all labeled by letter that are found in most states including South Carolina. No matter which insurer providing the coverage the same letter will offer the same benefits.
During the six month Medigap Open Enrollment Period “OEP” is the best time to enroll. This begins on the first day of the same month you are 65 years old or older and that you are already enrolled in Medicare Part B. You can enroll in any Medigap plan during the OEP that is being offered by any of the insurers that are located in your area without having to submit to a medical underwriting check. You can still enroll in a Medigap plan after the Medigap Open Enrollment Period, the insurer may request a medical background resulting in a pre-existing condition causing restrictions to be placed on your coverage. This could also cause your Medigap coverage to cost more or you could possibly be denied coverage all together.
Medicare Supplement plans for South Carolina don’t vary in coverage or benefits between the different plans with the same letter because Medigap plans are standardized. Though the cost can vare depending on the insurer. It’s always best to find out which plans are made available in your area and then make a selection that is based on your health and budgetary needs.
